Will ‘Sgili’ Davies 14 February — 5 October was a Wales international rugby union player who played club rugby for Swansea. He won four caps for Wales and was part of the Welsh side that faced the touring South Africans in Davies, known more commonly as ‘Sgili’, was originally a rugby scrum-half and centre, before moving into the forward, and eventually settling as a flanker. He faced the South Africans twice during their tour of Britain , once with Wales and once with Swansea. In the Swansea game, Davies set up his team’s only score when he snapped up a loose ball, that broke loose after a South African tackle. He punted the ball forward for Claude Davey to beat the covering Springbok players to collect it and score a try. Davies was first selected for Wales to face the South Africans in and although Wales lost the match 8—3, Davies scored the only Welsh points with a try. Davies showed considerable skill and maturity in a debut game when he timed his move on a loose ball to pick the correct bounce to kick the ball forward and then successfully chase it over the line. Under the captaincy of Jack Bassett , Wales won the game 12—5, and three weeks later was chosen to face Scotland. His final game for Wales was against Ireland in a Championship decider that was lost when the normally dependable Jack Bassett missed the game’s final conversion.

In winter , a Tibetan monk lectured the world leaders gathered at Davos on the importance of Happiness.
The recent DSM-5 , the manual of all diagnosable mental illnesses, for the first time included shyness and grief as treatable diseases. Happiness has become the biggest idea of our age, a new religion dedicated to well-being. In this brilliant dissection of our times, political economist William Davies shows how this philosophy, first pronounced by Jeremy Bentham in the s, has dominated the political debates that have delivered neoliberalism.
From a history of business strategies of how to get the best out of employees, to the increased level of surveillance measuring every aspect of our lives; from why experts prefer to measure the chemical in the brain than ask you how you are feeling, to why Freakonomics tells us less about the way people behave than expected, The Happiness Industry is an essential guide to the marketization of modern life. Davies shows that the science of happiness is less a science than an extension of hyper-capitalism.

The best way of ensuring this happened was to build a communications infrastructure that would make it possible for millions of people to share information in real-time. As the Covid crisis was beginning to take hold in the US, the New York Times carried a story about an online retailer in Tennessee called Matt Colvin, who had stockpiled 17, bottles of hand sanitiser in order to exploit surging demand, only to have his account suspended by Amazon.
Individuals were constrained and shaped by trends and norms that were manifest only at a macro-level.

Clive Gamble, and became a Lecturer in September I was a founder member of the Stage 3 Project , which aimed to set the extinction of Neanderthals and the arrival of Homo sapiens in Europe into a broad and coherent ecological and climatic framework. From May I shall be running a 3-year, Leverhulme Trust funded, project to explore innovations and manufacturing techniques in the c.
My research interest lie primarily in the analysis of mobility and dispersals in past hunter-gatherers, and in the development of what is often called “behavioural modernity” the traits that archaeologists believe characterise humans today, such as language, music, symbolism, complex long-distance social networks. Was “behavioural modernity” restricted to Homo sapiens , our own species, or did other hominin species, such as Neanderthals, show evidence of some of these traits as well?
Were these “modern” traits present as a coherent package from the start, or did they arise piecemeal in different places and at different times? How does the process of innovation and transmission of ideas operate in mobile societies? The intermittent representation of some of the key behavioural traits in the Palaeolithic archaeological record can be linked to mobility, dispersal and interaction patterns in hominins, set against a background of environmental and climatic change.
The apparent invention of ceramic figurines in different places and at different times within the late Palaeolithic will be tested, as will alternative hypotheses e. For more than 16 years I have been closely involved in the reconstruction of past environments and climates, and the relationship of those models to the late Palaeolithic record thousand years ago.
How did our hunter-gatherer ancestors respond to climatic and environmental change during the last Ice Age? We should not suppose that Palaeolithic peoples simply endured whatever climates and environments characterised their landscapes; instead, much evidence points to active responses being made by these hunter-gatherers in deciding which environments and resources to exploit. Improving the quality of our archaeological dating is crucial to enable us to relate past hunter-gatherer decisions and interactions to contemporary environmental conditions.
Thus, since I have thus been closely involved in three NERC-funded projects designed to improve our chronologies for the period thousand years ago.

How have feelings come to shape the world around us? Why has politics become so fractious and warlike? What might the future hold? In this bold and compelling exploration of our new political reality, William Davies reveals how feelings have come to reshape our world. Drawing on history, philosophy, psychology and economics, Nervous States is an essential guide to the turbulent times we are living through. What can the chemical composition of your brain tell a potential employer about you?
As a result, our emotions have become a new resource to be bought and sold. In a fascinating investigation combining history, science and ideas, William Davies shows how well-being influences all aspects of our lives: business, finance, marketing and smart technology.

It has never yet come to hand; and if this express should reach your Excellency before the bearer of one I wrote you today sets out on his return, I shall be obliged to you to inform him where he may get, or I may send for it.
